Only the Good Friday: Being the Queen of Cups

Each morning, I draw a “focus card” to help guide me through the day. Often, that card helps me filter my thinking. Sometimes it points me in  a direction for the day’s writing. Other times, it helps remind me why I’m doing what I do. This morning, I drew the Queen of Cups - a lovely coincidence on Only the Good Friday.

So who is the Queen of Cups?

The Queen of Cups sits on her throne, her gaze directed at the cup she holds in her hands. In most decks, her expression is directed inward, thoughtful and dreamy. It’s a reference to the general overall meaning of the Cups in the Tarot - a directive to be in touch with your emotions, to go with the flow, to know yourself and understand from whence your motivations bloom. Only the Good Friday #4 - I’m Back!

Yes, I am. I’m back! And that is a good thing coming at the tail end of a week of eh, not so terrific things. First, of course, is the fact that I have been gone. Unfortunately, my cable company thinks that I should pay for the services that they provide, and pay for them on time. While I completely agree with this notion in principle, my life doesn’t always live up to my expectations and I occasionally - or more than occasionally - end up being unable to meet that commitment. When that happens, I end up missing in action for a few days or a week. That’s what happened last week.

Of course, there was a GOOD side to that - someone in my neighborhood had unsecured wifi, which allowed me to occasionally skate online for short periods of time. Unfortunately, sometime last weekend, they apparently figured out how to secure their wifi and that did me in. No more internet access for me till I could get the bill paid. That gets a little complicated, since I actually make my money online and if I can’t get online, I can’t generate income.

On the other hand, in the interest of being true to my mother’s half-full philosophy of life, being offline meant that I had all the time in the world to devote to things I’ve been neglecting - things that I can do without an internet connection. And the result of that concentrated time - my patio has been cleaned and trenches dug to install a retaining wall around my raised planting bed… just in time for spring planting. Considering that we’re JUST past the danger of night frosts, I’ve got that done just in time.

The other project I put time into - my Tarot deck. I managed to clean up several cards and put together several more. I’m now three cards away from having the Major Arcana finished. My favorite?

Only the Good Friday #3 - A Tarot Spread for Good

It’s Only the Good Friday, and I’ve got something special - the Spreading Good Tarot Spread. It’s designed to help you focus on the good in your life, and how you can draw out and spread good in all the areas of your life. Use it to help you find ways that you can find, strengthen and spread good things in your life, your community and your world. Here’s how the spread looks:

only the good tarot spread

Before you begin with the Spreading Good Tarot spread, take a few moments to put yourself into a positive frame of mind. Do what works best for you - a few moments of silent meditation, a cup of tea or coffee, a scented candle. Think about the good things in your life - is it a beautiful day? Did your boss praise your work? Pull up positive thoughts and focus on them for a few minutes, then shuffle the cards and lay them out.

The  Positions and Their  Meanings

Self - You are the center of your world. In many ways, you are a reflection and a seed of the world around you. Where is the good in you? How can you draw on that? What do you need to do to be good to yourself?

Home - Your home is a microcosm of the world. What you manifest in your home is what you will bring with you out into the world. What do you need to do to bring more good into your home? How can you maximize the good in your home? What changes should you make in your physical surroundings?

Family - Your family is your base in the world. Strengthening your family helps you stand strong in the world. What strength can you draw from your family? What can you put into your family? What things can you do to improve your family life?

Friends - Your friends are your next sphere of influence. They can bring more good - or block the good that you can do. Who are your friends? How do they affect you? How can you affect them? What changes should you make in your relationships with friends to bring and spread more good in the world of your friendships?

Work - Your work world makes up a major part of your life. It can affect your mood, your attitude and your physical reality in the world. What do you take from your work? What do you give in your work? What can you do to make your work experience more positive for yourself and your co-workers?

Community - Community is more than where you live. It includes the communities in which you involve yourself - your church, your clubs, your organizations, your neighborhood. What actions can you take to promote the good in your communities? How can you best benefit from the communities in which you participate?

World  - The World is the largest community of which you are a part. All the good that you give and take in all areas of your life affect far more than only those you touch and see in your daily life. What good manifests itself in the world? What do you give to the world? How can you manifest more good in the world?

For a more in-depth reading based on this spread, lay out two cards  for each position - the first to represent the good you can find and the second to advise you on actions to take to increase the good in that sphere of your life. Here’s the Spreading Good reading I laid out this morning:

Only the Good Friday #2 - The Law of Return and me

A while ago, my daughter’s counselor greeted me at the end of a session with “Blessed be! I didn’t know you’re Pagan!” I asked him how he figured it out - especially since I seldom self-identify myself that way - and he told me he’d asked the Princess about her philosophy of life and she’d described - without quoting - the Law of Return and told him she’d learned it from me.

Now, I’m not just bragging on the fact that my daughter did me proud with that - though she did. I’m proud she learned the lesson, and has chosen it as a central guiding principle. I’m also amused by the way I came by the lesson… and some of you will probably be amused by it, too. The Wise Woman who taught me about the Law of Return was a Catholic nun. Here’s how it happened.

When I was 16, I made myself my first amulet. It was a small cloth bag sewn by hand and closed with a drawstring.  It held a small blue glass bead formed by dropping molten glass into cold water, a folded slip of homemade paper probably inscribed with some boy’s name, dried rosepetals from my grandmother’s garden and a penny minted in my birth year.

Let me tell you about that penny. I’d spent months looking for it, sorting through my mother’s tip jars and all the penny jars I could find. I’d checked my change every time I bought something, and asked people to keep an eye out for me. It was a special prize, and meant a lot to me to have it.

One morning in Latin class, Sr. Marie told us about her last class - a freshman catechism class. Their project for the year was supporting their “adopted” child through a Catholic charity. Each week, they held bake sales to raise money and once a month they sent the money to the charity. This month when they’d counted up their take, they’d realized they were just a couple dollars short of being able to sponsor a SECOND child. They’d all dug into pockets and wallets, but at the end of the class, they were still a dollar and some change short of the needed amount.

I still remember it was Chad Smith who reached into his pocket first and said, “Here’s another quarter, Sister.” She tried to shoo him away, but by that time everyone else was digging too. There were only six of us in that class, and we each came up with stray coins from our pockets - nickels, dimes, quarters and pennies.

You can guess what happened, can’t you? Sr. Marie counted up the change and exclaimed that we’d made up all but a penny of what the freshman needed. She was delighted - and knew that they would be too. We, on the other hand, were disappointed. We -wanted- to make that dollar and change up for the freshman. It had become important to us, and every one of us dug into our bags and pockets again and came up empty. And then - I remembered my penny. With a flourish, I pulled it out of its little sack around my neck and triumphantly exclaimed, “I’ve got it!”

Sr. Marie tried not to take it. She demurred that it must be an important penny if I wore it around my neck. I was insistent, even though I figured it would take me months to replace it. When she realized that I wasn’t about to back down, she took the penny and then said to me, very quietly, “Just remember that the good you do comes back to you seven fold.”

That afternoon, I told the story on the bus to my best friend. I was having just a twinge of buyer’s regret, knowing how long it took me to find that last 1959 penny. The girl sitting in the seat in front of us overheard part of the conversation and turned around with a handful of change. She plucked a penny out of it and said, “Oh, for heaven’s sake. It’s just a penny. Here!” I started to explain that I needed a 1959 penny, but stopped when I looked down at the date - 1959.

It didn’t end there, though. Later that afternoon, I was walking down a driveway on my paper route and my toe kicked a coin on the ground. I bent over to pick it up - another 1959 penny. I got a third 1959 penny in a tip envelope from one of my regular customers. In all, seven 1959 pennies found their way to me over the next few days - and not one of them was deliberately looked for. One penny was a strong coincidence. Two was confirmation. But seven? It was a life-affirming event.

Have you ever had the Law of Return manifest in your life in such an overt way? What have you given that’s been returned to you increased? It’s Only the Good Friday so share the good things!

Only the Good Friday #1 - The Good Stuff Today

In my roaming around this morning, I ran across this very warm, touching post from Insightful Nana, which led me over to the Only the Good Friday posts at This Eclectic Life , which was like y’know, Serendipity, because I had been thinking all morning that I really wish there was a meme that fits my mood this morning. And there it is - still in the development stages - Only the Good Friday.

The concept: One day a week, resolve to post ONLY GOOD stuff, noting snarky, mean or negative. I’m totally down with that concept, so I’m jumping on the Only the Good Friday bandwagon both here and over at Coffee Break. From now on, you’ll read nothing but good stuff from me on Fridays. I hope you’ll join us - Thorne is in, too, so you’ll get your share of witchy Friday goodness along with great coffee, inspiration and Tarot.

So here’s what’s GOOD with me today:

Ace of Cups - AnnaK TarotI was scouting around looking for an inspirational Tarot card to post over at Tarot Tuesday (that’s my own home-grown Tarot meme) and I ran into this stunning deck over at Aeclectic Tarot. Intrigued, I followed the link to the author’s web site and learned that the Anna.K Tarot Set would be available for sale — tomorrow.

Back when my kids were little, I had over fifty Tarot decks. I collected them for their beauty and the way that they “felt” to me. One tragic day, I left the SO with the baby while I ran some errands. The baby, for the record, was about 5 months old. The next day, I found ALL of my Tarot decks in a jumble in a box - completely stuck together with dried baby formula. His story was that “she got into them and knocked over the formula while I was filling her bottle”. Instead of telling me, he just scooped them all up and threw them into a box and HID them. There was no salvaging even one full deck out of the ruin.

Since then, I’ve only managed to ever have one deck at a time - until last year, when I slowly started to build my collection again. This week I had a little windfall in the form of extra writing assignments, and I’d already earmarked part of it to buy myself a new deck - and Serendipity dropped it right into my lap.

I’ve also managed to be right on track with getting the first Tarot Tuesday post up - it’s another Ace from Anna K.’s deck, so do drop over there and take a look. That post also includes links to Anna K.’s website where she has an awesome javascript online reading - for free - using her deck, pictures of each card in the deck, and her interpretations of each one.

So that’s my Tarot goodie for today. Do go check it out. If you like the Universal Rider-Waite deck, you’ll like this, even though it deviates slightly.
